All sessions follow RSE, Ofsted, Church of England, PSHE and Unicef Guidelines

Primary workshops delivered by a qualified and experienced KS1 and KS2 teacher.

I never thought there'd be a session like this.

Child, Y3

Workshops are designed to feel positive, comfortable and safe.  Children are always given the option to say nothing and no-one is ever asked a personal question or to reveal anything personal about themselves or their family.

Age-appropriate and child-friendly.  Mel created a lovely, safe, positive environment where the children felt able to ask questions.

Reception and Year 1 Assembly

  • Read And Tango Makes Three - the true story of a penguin with two Dads (Readings of this book can be found on Youtube)

  • Use pictures to discuss lots of different families including single parent, step parents, living with grandparents, adopted or fostered and same-sex parents.  Talk about how families might look different but that they all share Love.

  • Sing and sign We are Family

  • 30 minutes

Year 2 Assembly

  • Introduce 'Identity' and how we are all different.

  • Read Little Red Riding Dude by Olly Pike

  • Discuss how there are multiple ways of being different  - even for identical twins.  We all have our own identity, which is unique to us

  • Discuss - is it OK/Good to celebrate difference?

  • Read poem 'There's No Such Thing as a Normal'

  • Song - 'What I am is..' by Will.i.am

  • 25 minutes

Y3 - Y4 Assembly

  • Read Prince Henry by Olly Pike

  • Discuss - can two men or two women marry in the UK? - yes.  Is it the same everywhere?  - no.  

  • The king in the book rips up the law that says a prince cannot marry a poor person.  Are there any rules we would like to rip up?  Show different rules to discuss eg Everyone in our school should look the same.

  • Song - Stand Up

  • 25 minutes

Y3 - Y4 Assembly (2nd visit)

  • Discuss - can two men or two women marry in the UK? - yes.  Is it the same everywhere?  - no.  

  • Game - Who says what in the story?

  • Song - 'What I am is..' by Will.i.am

Y2 - Class Session

  • Play game identifying different jobs and discuss if men and women could both do the job.

  • Discuss is it OK to play with whatever toys you like or wear whatever clothes you like whether you are a girl or a boy?

  • Read story 'Gerald Wants to Wear Pink' 

  • Song - Be Yourself

  • 30 minutes

Year 3 Class Session

  • Read Are You a Boy or a Girl and discuss how it doesn't really matter - we can all like different things.

  • Discuss our favourite things - clothes, food, games, etc.

  • Complete the activity sheet - I am Me celebrating what makes each person special

  • 30 minutes

Year 4 Class Session

I'm Not A girl.jpg
  • Read I'm Not A Girl  and talk about how Hannah knows she's a girl, even though she has a body that makes people think she's a boy.  She grows in confidence until she is able to explain how she feels to everyone.

  • Explain that some other people feel this way, that it is not sudden but is something people think about for a long time.

  • Allow time for questions and to clarify understanding. 

  • 30 minutes

Year 5 Class Session

Introducing Teddy.jpg
  • Play a game about gender and stereotyping. Focus on how being a boy or girl shouldn't restrict who you are.

  • Read Introducing Teddy and discuss how occasionally someone's body does not match who they feel they are and that's fine. Explain that this isn't sudden, but is something people think about for a long time.  Allow time for questions. 

  • Use the PopnOlly video to explain basic words related to sexual orientation very simply eg Gay means a man who loves or is attracted to another man.

  • Show positive role models of LGBT+ celebrities.  Discuss what an ally is and the importance of Pride to LGBT+ people.  

  • 60 minutes

Year 6 Class Session

  • Discuss how we can't know everything about someone just by looking at them.

  • Read Call Me Max  and discuss how Max helped people understand that he is a boy, even though his body looks like he is a girl.

  • Explain that this isn't a sudden thing, but is something people think about for a long time.  Allow time for questions and to clarify understanding.

  • Discuss the character, Steven who is a boy who likes wearing dresses.  Clarify how this is different from Max.  

  • Use the PopnOlly video to explain basic words related to sexual orientation very simply eg Gay means a man who loves or is attracted to another man.

  • Show positive role models of LGBT+ celebrities.  Discuss what an ally is and the importance of Pride to LGBT+ people.

Year 5/6 Class Session
-Second Visit

  • Recap previously learned LGBT+ terminology.

  • Use the PopnOlly videos to explain basic words related to sexual orientation and gender very simply eg Gay means a man who loves or is attracted to another man.

  • Show examples of Pride marches from now and from the past - discuss how things were legally and socially different in the past for LGBT+ people.  Give examples of LGBT+ people from history eg Alan Turing, Anne Lister, Elagabalus and Chevalier D'Eon.  

  • Clarify the law now in simple terms - being LGBT+ is legal and LGBT+ people are protected by law. Same-sex marriage is legal.

  • Explore gender stereotyping in terms of books, toys, clothes, etc.

Years 7-9 Class Sessions
(offered post Staff and Ally Training)

  • Sort and identify key terms relating to gender or sexuality eg gay, bisexual and non-binary.  Ensure understanding of the terms, but stress that people can use terms that feel appropriate for them.

  • More explanation about what trans means and clarification that being a girl who likes traditionally 'boy' things does not make you trans.  Discussion on treating someone who is trans with respect

  • Info on the history of LGBT+ rights and focus on some interesting LGBT+ people from history and the present day.

  • Discussion on the use of 'gay' as an insult term and it's impact on people who are gay or have gay family members or friends

  • Discussion on being an ally and treating people fairly and equally

  • Information on Space Youth Project Youth Groups

  • Information on support in school - Ally Staff

  • 50-60 minutes

  • Positive assembly showing that LGBT+ people are much more than just being LGBT+, using the real-life stories of historical and contemporary LGBT+ people.

  • Positive ending, including the importance of Pride and allyship to LGBT+ people.

KS3 and KS4 Assembly
(offered post Staff and Ally Training)

  • Learn about the history of LGBTQ+ people's rights in the UK from the 1500s to present day

  • Discover specific laws which have affected LGBTQ+ people in UK history

  • Includes mention of laws which still exist around the world, criminalising LGBTQ+ people today

  • Share ideas for how individuals can champion equal rights, with links to Citizenship curriculum.

  • Supportive resources including Timeline PDF and links to further learning
